James McCheyne was also known as James McShan.2 He was likely born circa 1805.1 He was the son of Ann (?) James McCheyne may have been born circa 1820 at Ireland.2

He married Elizabeth Hawthorne, daughter of David Hawthorn and Sarah (?), circa 1840.1

The working class was looked down upon by the contemporary ministers of religion, seeing:
the most mournful signs of moral deterioration - infidelity shedding its baleful influence over the minds and habits of the poor; intemperence laying waste to their bodily frame, and destroying the peace of their families, and both together inducing a habitual disregard for the sabbath day, and a sullen contempt of the house of God, and the solemn obligations of Christianity.3

The poulation of Greenock was estimated to be about 29,000 in 1835, of which it was thought two thirds were from the poor or working classes. Crimes such as assult was rare, but "theft and house-breaking, and depradations on property of various kinds, are often practiced with impunity."4 James McCheyne was a labourer in March 1841.2

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Elizabeth Hawthorne (which other records indicate is his spouse) at McMillans Land, Cartsdyke, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 20. Also in the household were his 2 month old daughter, a woman who was perhaps his mother as well as a man who may have been his wife's brother - and two boarders.2

He was listed as being away at sea in the 1851 census with Elizabeth Hawthorne as his spouse at Broad Close, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His mother and 4 of his young children were also living there.5

It was estimated that in 1838, more than 3,500 men were employed on vessels registered at Greenock - and that number would have only increased in the 13 years since.6 His occupation was recorded as being listed as being 'at sea' by his wife in the census.5

On Sunday, 20 November 1853 a Mary McKechnie stole some clothes from James and was sentenced to prison for 5 years. This was not the last problem this family was to have with Mary.7

James died before May 1861.8
