John Allan married Eliza Anne Lipson, daughter of Thomas Lipson and Elizabeth Emma Fooks, on Tuesday, 25 February 1840.1 John Allan and Eliza Anne Lipson moved to Great Western, Victoria, in 1842.2
In early 1842 they took up 137,000 acres in the Great Western district and named it Allenvale after John's father's farm in Tasmania. However, they later lost part of their farm in a land dispute.2
