Samuel was born circa 1867 at Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire.2 He was the son of Thomas Ellis and Martha Ann Nicholson.1

He was recorded as living with his parents and younger siblings Amy, Anne, Effie and Alexander in the 1881 census at Marmion Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. He was recorded as being 14 years old.3 His occupation was recorded as being a sailmaker's apprentice in the census.3

He was recorded as living with his parents and younger siblings Anne, Amy, Alexander, Ida and Effie in the 1891 census at Church Gap Road, Hoose, Wirral, Cheshire. He was recorded as being 24 years old.4 His occupation was recorded as being a sailmaker in the census.4
