George Darby was baptised at St. Mary the Virgin on Sunday, 7 October 1792 at Great Parndon, Essex.1 Great Parndon is an ancient but small and isolated parish. It had a population of 300 in 1801, rising to 534 in 1891, and was a place of scattered farms and hamlets. The main crops were grass, cereals and vegetables. The church of St. Mary the Virgin stands on an elevated site, with walls of flint rubble and brick for the transcepts. It dates from the 15th century.

He was the son of Thomas Darby and Elizabeth Perry.1

George Darby married (?) Darby circa 1820.2

In Thomas Darby's will on 9 July 1830 Elizabeth Darby, Ann Darby, Richard Darby, James Darby, Hannah Darby, George Darby, Elizabeth Perry and Sarah Darby were named as heirs. The will specified that all of his posessions were to go to his wife, and then after her death it was to all be sold and divided amongst his children equally..3

In the codicil to Thomas Darby's will on 5 August 1830 Elizabeth Darby, Ann Darby, Richard Darby, James Darby, Hannah Darby, George Darby, Elizabeth Perry, Elizabeth Darby and Sarah Darby were named as heirs. The codicil added that after the will was executed his children were to each generally pay 20 pounds each back to his executors, who would then divide the amount into three and give the resulting amount "for the use of my children which are these three William Darby, Elizabeth Brown and Susannah Bush for their own use and benefit in addition to their shares as before mentioned they not having had so much assistance from me". It is suspected that Thomas did not actually have a daughter Susannah, but referred to another close member of his family. He also bequeathed 40 pounds to the maintenance of Elizabeth, the daughter of his late son Benjamin..3

Thomas Darby's will was probated on 9 August 1833. Thomas' wife Elizabeth died less than three years later, and his property was sold (and presumably the proceeds divided up as he specified) in accordance with his will and codicil..4

George lived in June 1838 at Shoreditch, London.2 He was a farmer in June 1838.2

He married Mary Webb, daughter of Arthur Webb and Catherine (?), at St. Leonard's on Thursday, 28 June 1838 at Shoreditch, London. George was the brother of Mary's first husband..1,2

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Mary Webb (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Great Parndon, Essex. He was 48 years old. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 45 years old. Also in the household were his thirteen year old step-daughter Elizabeth Darby (his deceased brother's daughter.)5 George Darby was an agricultural labourer on 7 June 1841.5

In Thomas Darby's will on 23 September 1847 Sarah Perry, Elizabeth Darby, Sarah Darby, William Darby, George Darby and Elizabeth Perry were named as heirs. George was to receive, on the death of his mother, a quarter share of the funds from the liquidation of his father's estate..6 George lived on 23 September 1847 at Great Parndon, Essex.6 He was an agricultural labourer foreman in March 1851.7

He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Mary Webb as his spouse at Brocles, Great Parndon, Essex. He was 58 years old. He was recorded as being 57 years old. Also living in the house was his daughter-in-law Elizabeth.7

Thomas Darby's will was probated on 21 January 1853.6 George Darby was a farm bailiff in April 1861.8

He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Mary Webb as his spouse at Jackson Farm, Great Parndon, Essex. He was 68 years old.8

George died in October 1863. He was buried on 18 October 1863 at Great Parndon, Essex.1
