Grace Fookes was born on 1 May 1857 at Launceston, Tasmania.3,2 She was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Berjew Fookes and Louisa Jean Hobkirk.2 She presumably lived with her parents at Colebrook Dale, Tasmania, in July 1861.4
On 5 July 1861 her sister Amy died at the age of 9 a day before her tenth birthday.
She performed at a concert at Breadalbane, Tasmania, on the evening of Monday, 26 August 1872 singing 'Sweet Dublin Bay' and 'I'm so tired' "in such a pleasing manner as to call for an encore". Her father expressed thanks at the end for the quality of the entertainments.5,6
On 15 November 1872 her brother Arthur died at the age of 5 killed by the kick of a horse in a paddock adjoining their home in Perth, Tasmania.7,8,9
For several years Grace was a the superintendant of the Sunday School; later she was to be presented with a silver cake basketby the teachers and scholars. She was also the church organist.10
St. David's Mission Church Campbell Street, in Hobart, opened on the morning of Sunday, 12 July 1885 at 7:30 with the celebration of Holy Communion; Samuel acted in the role of deacon, and Grace played the organ at evensong that night (but was not accorded that honour for the ceremony itself).11,12,13
She married James Sutherland Babbington, a Church of England minister, son of Lieutenant General David Staig Babington and Maria Anne Sutherland, in a Church of England cermony at St. David's Mission Church Campbell Street on Wednesday, 12 August 1885 at Hobart. She was 28 and her husband James was 33. This was the first marriage to ever take place in this church. As was the tradition, she was presented with a bible by the churchwardens.. James and Grace went on to have three children together Helen Fookes, Ernest Samuel Fooks and Louis Fookes were also there.14,10,3,2
Her father died 2 November 1892 at the age of 70. Grace was aged 35 when this happened.
In 1893 James and Grace reported items missing from their property at George Town, Tasmania, including two pairs of woollen socks, dark blue ribbed woollen stockings, and two hundredweight of cut oak firewood.15
The will of Reverend James Sutherland Babington, in which Grace was named sole heir was proved on 7 February 1913 The estate had a value of £606 15s.3 Grace lived circa 1920 at at Rothley 13 Sorrett Avenue in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern.16
Grace died on 9 October 1939 at the Melbourne suburb of Malvern at age 82.2
