Margaret Gibb

Margaret Gibb may have been born in 1821 at Aberdeen.¹ She may have been born in 1822 at Aberdeen.² She was the daughter of James Gibb and Christian Angus.¹

Margaret Gibb was recorded as living with the Legg family and members of her own family in the 1841 census at Netherkirkgate, Aberdeen. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; her approximate age was recorded as 20 years old.³ Her occupation was recorded as being a dressmaker in the census.³

Margaret Gibb married Thomas Maxwell on Thursday, 7 July 1842 at Aberdeen.⁴

She was recorded as living with her father and brother in the 1851 census at Regent Quay, Aberdeen. She was recorded as being 29 years old.²

She married James Reid, a house carpenter, in marriage conducted according to the rites of the Free Trinity Church on Friday, 27 February 1852 at Aberdeen. The wedding certificate was also signed by James Gibb.^5,6

Margaret Gibb was recorded as the spouse of James Reid in the 1861 census at 58 John Street, Aberdeen. Also living in the house were their 5 children and her sister Euphemia.⁷

Her father died 20 July 1864 at the approximate age of 67. Margaret and James lived in October 1869 at Aberdeen.⁸

Margaret Gibb was recorded as the spouse of James Reid in the 1871 census at Aberdeen. She was recorded as being 60 years. Also living in the house were four of their children and a servant.⁹

Margaret Gibb was recorded as the spouse of James Reid in the 1881 census at Aberdeen. She was recorded as being 60 years. Also living in the house were four of their children and a servant.¹⁰ She presumably lived with her spouse James at Aberdeen in November 1881.¹¹

Her husband James died 6 November 1881 at the age of 66, leaving her a widow.

The will of James Reid, in which Margaret Gibb and David Mitchell Reid were named as heirs was proved on 8 March 1882. His estate was valued at 572 pounds..¹¹

On 3 May 1882 her daughter Robina died at the age of 24. Robina's child, also Robina, died two days later.

She was recorded as head of household in the 1891 census at 94 Irvine Place, in Aberdeen. Also living in the house was her children Jessie and Irvine, as well as Jessie's husband David and her six-month old grandson.¹² Her occupation was recorded as being an annuitant in the census.¹²

Margaret died on 20 April 1897 at Aberdeen.¹ Her body was interred. She is buried with her husband, her daughter, and her grand-daughter..¹³
