Thomas Dew Boden was baptised at All Saints and Saint John on Friday, 22 January 1779 at Hertford.1 The city of Hertford dates back to at least 673, and was an important market town surrounded by agricultural land. From the late 16th century, it had access to the London corn markets via the River Lea. All Saints church was built in the 15th century with a cruciform plan and a west tower. However, it burnt down in 1891.

He was the son of Thomas Boden.1 Thomas Dew Boden was listed as an ironmonger in 1823 at Market Place, Hertford.2 At the age of 15 William Darby was indentured to Thomas Dew Boden as an apprentice ironmonger for a period of 7 years on 2 August 1824. William's father George had recently married Thomas Boden's sister.3 Circa 1830 he was a Trustee of the Poor of Hertford, or as they were more correctly known, a 'Trustee of the Chequer Rents.4' He He was entitled to vote based on property that he owned. in 1832.5 His estate was probated on 7 February 1835.
