Donald was born on Sunday, 11 May 1913 at Cobar, New South Wales.1 He was the son of William Henry Hosnell Nicholson and Mary Nolan McLennan. He presumably lived with his parents at Glenwood Station, in Nymagee, New South Wales, circa 1915.2 Donald Francis Nicholson was also known as Jack.2 Donald was a gunner with the 551 Lt AA Battery in the Second World War.3 The Nicholson's were a hard-working family but like most people of their generation enjoyed a simple social life with a love of sports; especially tennis, cricket and anything to do with horses. Tennis and cricket were played at Glenwood and dances held in the woolshed and the "Big Room" at night.2
