Mary was born on Friday, 13 June 1851 at Melbourne.1,2 She was the daughter of Patrick Bourke and Mary Ann Cannon. Mary Bourke was baptised at St. Francis' on Monday, 23 June 1851 at Melbourne.3 She presumably lived with her parents at Jeffcott House in Jeffcott Street, Melbourne, in August 1863. This was a wooden house, "with double verandah, and contains seven good rooms and kitchen". It was probably used as a boarding house.4,5,6,7

Her father died 3 August 1863 at the approximate age of 63 years. Mary was aged 12 when this happened.

She married Thomas Fitzgerald, in 1873 at Orange, New South Wales.. Altogether they were to have four children.8

She may have attended the wedding of her brother in the marriage of Michael Bourke and Susannah Alletta Nicholson in a Wesleyan Methodist ceremony at her father's house on Saturday, 26 December 1874 at Parkes, New South Wales. Michael and Susannah went on to have five children over the next 10 years.9

On 4 June 1885 she donated monies to the Dr. Torreggiani Memorial Fund.10

Thomas ws publican of the Deepwater Hotel, in Deepwater, New South Wales.11

In September 1885, Thomas Fitzgerald had his hotel (and one of his guests) robbed of some 'prints, sugar, boots &c.' by a William and Isabella Hawkins and Peter Smith. Hawkins and Smith were arrested near the Queensland border.12,13,14

Mary died on 1 February 1895 at Deepwater, New South Wales, at age 43.15,16 She was buried at Emmaville cemetery, in Emmaville, New South Wales.16,17
