James George Smith may have been born in June 1817 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.3 He was the son of John Smith and (?) (?)2 James was born in September 1817 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.2 He may have been baptised on Tuesday, 30 September 1817 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.2 His full name may have been James Torrance Smith.4 James lived in January 1838 at the village of Gorleston-on-Sea near the town of Great Yarmouth, Suffolk.5 He was a plumber and glazier in January 1838.5

He married Lydia Manthorpe, daughter of a labourer, daughter of William Manthorpe and Hannah Read, in a Church of England ceremony on Monday, 8 January 1838 at Gorleston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, Suffolk. He was 20 and his wife Lydia was 20..6,3,7,5

He was recorded as head of household in the 1841 census with Lydia Manthorpe (which other records indicate is his spouse) at Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The 1841 census only recorded adult ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years; his approximate age was recorded as 20 years old. Also in the household were their two young children.8 His occupation was recorded as being a plumber in the census.8 James George Smith was a painter in October 1841.9

He was recorded as head of household in the 1851 census with Lydia Manthorpe as his spouse at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was 33 years old. His age was recorded as 34 years old. Also living in the house were six of their children aged 13 to three years old.10 His occupation was recorded as being a painter, plumber and glazier in the census.10

James, aged 33 and Lydia Manthorpe, aged 34 may have become the parents of Walter Thomas Smith on Friday, 16 May 1851 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.11,12,13

He was recorded as head of household in the 1861 census with Lydia Manthorpe as his spouse at 33 Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was 43 years old. He was recorded as being 43 years old. Also in the house were eight of his sons aged from 22 years to 12 months.3 His occupation was recorded as being a painter journeyman in the census.3

He was recorded as head of household in the 1871 census with Lydia Manthorpe as his spouse and children living at 6 Northumberland Close, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was 53 years old. He was recorded as being 53 years old.15 His occupation was recorded as being a plumber in the census.8

He was recorded as head of household in the 1881 census with Lydia Manthorpe as his spouse at 28 St. Nicholas Parade, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was 63 years old. His age was recorded as being 63 years old, and also in the household was his youngest daughter.16 His occupation was recorded as being a plumber and glazier in the census.16 James George Smith was a painter in 1883.17

He was recorded as head of household in the 1891 census with Lydia Manthorpe as his spouse at 69 Nelson Road North, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was 73 years old. His age was recorded as 73 years old. Also in the house was their youngest daughter, her son-in-law and a visitor.18 His occupation was recorded as being a plumber and painter in the census.18,19

James died at South Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.20,21,22 His body was interred at Burial Ground No.2 Parish of St. Nicholas on 17 January 1900 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.20
